Let’s talk about why you should never give your RAW photos to a client unless they absolutely pay for it. A lot of the time, when you take a photo, it’s only half of what you actually experienced. When you get home—or wherever you go to edit—you start to see things you didn’t notice before. You realize the photo wasn’t finished yet, and that’s where the real work begins.
Now, your client, or whoever is asking for these photos, needs to understand one thing: the reason they hired you is because of your finished work. They know you can take a good photo, but any image they’ve seen from you on Instagram or anywhere else was probably edited to a standard you’ve spent years developing. That’s your skill. That’s your art. That’s what they’re hiring you for.
So, be careful about giving away your RAW photos. When someone else puts their own edits on your work, it’s no longer yours—it doesn’t fully represent who you are as a creative or as a photographer. RAW photos are unfinished, and giving them away means handing over something that doesn’t show your full vision or style.
If a client insists on having them, make sure they pay for it. RAW files are valuable because they’re not just photos—they’re the foundation of your creative process. And if they want the foundation, they need to understand the value of what they’re asking for. At the end of the day, your edit is what makes your work yours. Protect that. Don’t let RAW photos leave your hands unless you’re getting what you’re worth.
